  title: "The Lighthouse Garden",
summary: "A keeper waters her garden at dusk, lights the lamp, and rests as the tide goes out.",
  paragraphs: [
"The island is small and green, and it sits very still in a calm sea. On its highest point stands a white lighthouse, its paint warm in the last of the afternoon sun. A narrow path of crushed shells winds down from the tower to a small stone cottage. The day has been long and quiet, and now it is slowly letting go.",
"The keeper steps out through the cottage door and pauses on the doorstep. She wears a soft gray sweater with the sleeves pushed up to her elbows, and a straw hat that has been rained on many times. The air smells of salt and warm grass. She takes one deep breath of it, and her shoulders settle down.",
"Behind the cottage, inside a low wall of gray stones, lies her garden. It is not a large garden, only a few neat rows, but everything in it has been tended with great care. The wall keeps off the wind, and the soil inside is dark and soft. At this hour the whole garden glows a gentle gold.",
"She walks along the path, and the shells crunch softly under her boots. A small watering can hangs from her hand, its metal handle worn smooth. Beyond the wall the sea is a wide silver plate, with barely a ripple on it. Far out, the sky is turning the color of peaches.",
"The first row is beans. They climb up a frame of weathered sticks, with soft green leaves and pale, thin pods hanging down like quiet fingers. The keeper runs her palm gently along the leaves, and they feel faintly fuzzy and cool. She checks each plant, not because anything is wrong, but because she likes to.",
"Next come the carrots, their feathery tops swaying very slightly in the breeze. She kneels, and the ground is warm against her knees, still holding the whole day's sunlight. She presses a finger into the soil beside one root and finds it damp and loose. The earth smells rich and sweet, like rain that has not fallen yet.",
"She tips the watering can, and the water falls in a soft silver curve. It sinks into the soil with only a faint hush. Little dark circles spread wide around each plant. A single bee, late for home, hums once past her ear and drifts away over the wall.",
"Beside the carrots grow lettuces, round and ruffled, in many shades of green. She touches the edge of one leaf, and a bead of water rolls into her palm. Further on there are small, round tomatoes, still warm from the sun. She picks one and holds it, and it smells green and bright and a little bit sharp.",
"She eats the tomato slowly, standing at the end of the row. It is sweet, and the skin gives way with a tiny pop. The juice is warm on her tongue. She closes her eyes for a moment and simply tastes it, and the whole summer is in that one bite.",
"Behind her the lighthouse stands tall and quiet. Its white walls have turned the pale pink of the sky. High at the top, the great glass lantern holds the last of the daylight like a drop of honey. She will climb up there soon, but not yet, because there is no hurry on this island.",
"At the far end of the garden grows a patch of herbs. Thyme and mint and sage spill over the edge of their bed. The keeper brushes her hand through them, and a soft cloud of scent rises, green and warm and sleepy. She rubs a sprig of mint between her fingers and holds it close to her face.",
"Sea birds begin to come home. They arrive in small groups, gliding low over the water, their wings catching the last pink light. They land on the rocks below the garden wall, one by one, and fold themselves up. Each one lands with a soft flutter and a small gruff murmur, as if saying goodnight.",
"The keeper sits on the low wall for a while and watches them settle. Some tuck their heads beneath their wings. Others stand on one leg, quite still, like little carved ornaments. The gentle sound of their murmuring drifts up over the stones, and then it grows quieter and quieter.",
"Beyond the rocks, the tide is going out. She can hear it, a long soft sigh as the water slips back over the pebbles. It leaves behind a wide dark shine of wet sand and little pools that hold the sky. The sea does this twice every day, patiently, and without a word.",
"She takes off her hat and sets it on her knee. The breeze moves through her hair, cool and gentle. The wall beneath her is still warm, and the stones hold the heat the way a mug does. She rests her hands on them, palms down, and lets the warmth soak in.",
"A few pale stars appear in the east, where the sky is turning blue. One shows itself, and then another. They look very small and very far, and yet they seem friendly. The keeper watches them for a while with no thought in her head, and there is just the evening, and herself, and the slow, steady sea.",
"At last she stands, picks up her watering can, and walks back along the shell path. The garden is quiet behind her, all its green going dark and soft. The leaves look like folded hands. She closes the little wooden gate and slips the latch with one finger.",
"At the cottage door she stops to take off her boots and sets them side by side on the step. Inside, the kitchen is warm and smells of bread. A kettle sits on the black stove, and a bowl of eggs rests on the table, each one pale brown and smooth.",
"She makes a small supper. Soup from yesterday warms in a pot, with barley and carrots in it, and she stirs it with a long wooden spoon. The steam rises, and the window above the stove fogs gently at its corners. She cuts a slice of bread and spreads butter on it, soft and thick.",
"She eats at the window, looking out toward the dark water. The soup is gentle and salty and sweet. The bread is still warm in the middle. With each spoonful she feels herself grow rounder and calmer, as if the day is being slowly folded away inside her.",
"When the bowl is empty, she washes it in the stone sink. The water is warm, and the bowl is clean and quiet in her hands. She dries it on a soft cloth and sets it in its place on the shelf, next to the blue cup and the small round plate.",
"Then she takes the old lantern from its hook by the door and steps out into the dusk. The sea breeze is cool now, and it smells of seaweed and distant rain. The path is pale under her feet. Behind her, the cottage window glows, a small square of gold.",
"At the foot of the tower she pushes open a tall wooden door. It opens with a long, low creak, like a sleepy yawn. Inside, the air is cool and smells of stone and lamp oil and polished brass. A spiral staircase winds up into the dark, and she begins to climb.",
"Her footsteps make a soft, steady rhythm on the iron steps. Round and round and up she goes, one hand sliding along the smooth rail. Small windows in the wall show the sea in slices, a little darker with each turn. She is not tired, and she climbs the way a person walks through their own home.",
"At the top, she steps through a small door into the lantern room. It is round and wide, with tall windows all around, and in the middle sits the great lamp. Its glass lens is made of many curved rings, stacked like the layers of a shell. The brass around it gleams softly in the light of her lantern.",
"She stands for a moment and looks out. The whole sea lies below, dark blue and calm as a sleeping lake. The last pale line of the sunset still rests on the edge of the world. A few lights twinkle far away on the water, where a slow boat is going home.",
"She lifts the glass chimney and trims the wick, gently, the way one smooths a sleeping child's hair. She strikes a match, and a small flame blooms, yellow and steady. She touches it to the wick, and the flame grows taller and rounder. The glass rings catch the light and fill with gold.",
"Slowly, the great lens begins to turn. A quiet clockwork hums beneath it, a low whirr and a soft tick, tick, tick. The beam of light swings out across the water, long and pale, like a slow arm of gold. It passes over the waves, and over the rocks, and on into the dark.",
"She watches it make one full turn. The beam sweeps round the island, over the sleeping birds, over the garden wall, over the cottage roof. Everything it touches glows for a moment, and then goes back to soft dark. It does this gently, again and again, and never once in a hurry.",
"The keeper sits on a wooden stool beside the window. A wool blanket lies folded on it, and she draws it over her knees. Through the glass she can hear, very faintly, the tide drawing out across the sand. It is a sound like long, slow breathing, and she finds that her own breathing has matched it.",
"Every so often the beam comes round again, and the room fills with light and then fades. Light, and fade. Light, and fade. The rhythm is as old as the tower, and as steady as a heartbeat. It asks nothing of her, and it only goes on.",
"Below, the garden is dark, but she knows it is there. The beans are resting on their frames. The carrots are sleeping deep in the cool earth. The lettuces hold their little drops of water, and the herbs breathe their scent out into the night. All of them are tended, and all of them are still.",
"The sea birds on the rocks are silent now. Each one is a small warm bundle of feathers, tucked in against the wind. The tide has gone out far, and the wet sand shines under the stars. A single wave rolls in, so tiny and so slow, and spreads itself thin on the shore.",
"The keeper's eyes grow heavy. The blanket is soft against her chin. The turning of the lamp, the sigh of the tide, and the faint tick of the clockwork all blend into one low, humming peace. She does not have to watch the light, because the light will keep itself.",
"She thinks of the garden, and the soup, and the pink sky. Each thought comes slowly and passes like a boat across a wide, quiet harbor. There is nothing to hold on to. Everything is as it should be.",
"The beam goes round, and the sea breathes in. The beam goes round, and the sea breathes out. Her hands rest open in her lap.",
"The stars are thick overhead now, and the air in the lantern room is warm from the flame. She leans her head back against the cool curved glass. It holds her head like a soft hand. Her eyes close for a moment, and then they close again.",
"The light turns. The tide goes out. A bird shifts once in its sleep and is still.",
"Far down the stairs, the cottage waits with its bed made up. The sheets are cool and clean, and a quilt lies across them, patched in faded blues. She will go there soon, slowly, when she is ready. For now she rests where she is, in the warm turning light.",
"The beam sweeps over the sleeping sea. The island is quiet. The garden is quiet. The keeper is quiet.",
"Warm, and still, and slow. The lamp turns on and on, and watches over all of it, and the night lets go.",
"The light goes round. And she sleeps, and the sea goes on breathing, softly, softly, all night long.",
