title: "Rain at the Mountain Cabin",
summary: "Rain begins as you light a stove in a wooden cabin and settle under wool blankets.",
  paragraphs: [
"You have walked the last stretch of the mountain path, and now, at last, you can see the cabin. It sits at the edge of a pine forest, small and dark and made of wood the color of tea. A thin trail of moss grows along its roof. Everything about it looks patient, as if it has been waiting for exactly you.",
"The air up here is cool and clean. It smells of pine needles and cold stone and damp earth. High above, the sky is a soft pearl gray, and the clouds sit low on the ridge. Somewhere far off, a bird calls twice and then stops.",
"You climb the three wooden steps to the porch, and each one gives a gentle creak. A key hangs on a nail beside the door, just where you were told it would be. It is heavy and cool and a little rough with age. You hold it a moment before turning it in the lock.",
"The door swings open on a quiet room. It smells of old wood and wool and a trace of woodsmoke from some winter long ago. A faint light comes in through the window and lies across the floorboards in a pale square. You step inside and set your bag down by the wall, and the whole room seems to breathe out.",
"The cabin is one room, and everything in it is simple. There is a small iron stove in the corner, a wooden table with two chairs, and a deep armchair covered in a faded plaid cloth. A narrow bed stands under the sloping roof. Shelves along the wall hold jars and candles and a few worn books.",
"Just as you close the door behind you, the first drop of rain touches the roof. It makes one small tap, like a fingertip on a drum. Then comes another, further along, and then three together, soft and unhurried. The rain has begun.",
"You stand still and listen. The drops are light on the shingles, a scattering of quiet sounds, no two the same. On the porch outside, a few more fall on the old boards, and the smell of rain on dry wood drifts in through the cracks. It is a clean, sweet, dusty smell, and you breathe it in deeply.",
"Beside the stove there is a basket of split pine logs and a box of dry kindling. A tin of matches sits on the shelf above. You kneel on the rug, which is thick and a little scratchy under your knees, and open the small iron door of the stove. Inside it is dark and clean, with a faint smell of cold ash.",
"You lay the kindling in a small loose house, with a curl of papery bark in the middle. You strike a match, and it flares with a soft hiss. The flame is bright and yellow, and you carry it to the bark. The bark catches, and a little fire begins to whisper and crackle.",
"You place a split log on top, gently, as though tucking in a sleepy child. The fire climbs the wood in thin orange tongues. A smell of fresh resin fills the air, sharp and sweet and warm. You close the iron door and watch the glow through the small window of glass.",
"The stove begins to tick as the iron warms. It is a small, friendly sound, like a clock that is happy. Heat spreads out from it in slow waves. You hold your hands toward it and feel your palms grow warm, then your wrists, then your arms.",
"Outside, the rain grows a little stronger. It is no longer a scatter but a soft, even patter on the roof. A gutter at the corner begins to run, with a gentle trickle into a barrel. The whole forest takes on a hush, as if all the trees have bowed their heads to listen.",
"You light a candle on the table and set it in a small tin dish. The flame stands tall and still, then wavers as you move away, and settles again. It paints the walls the color of honey. The shadows of the chairs lean long and soft against the planks.",
"In a deep wooden chest at the foot of the bed you find the blankets. There are four of them, heavy and woolen, in deep red and green and blue and cream. They smell of cedar and fresh air. You lift one and hold it against your cheek, and it is thick and warm and softly rough.",
"You spread the blankets on the bed one by one. The cream one goes first, then the green, then the blue. Last comes the red, folded back at the top. The pillow is plump, in a plain white case, and when you press it once with your palm it springs up kindly.",
"By now the cabin has grown warm. You take off your boots and set them near the door, and your socks feel soft on the wide floorboards. The planks are smooth, worn by many years of quiet steps. You walk slowly across the room, and the floor gives a small friendly creak with each pace.",
"At the window you stop and look out. The pines are dark green, almost black, and the rain moves among them in silver threads. Mist hangs in the hollows, and the stones near the porch shine with wet. There is a smell of wet stone now, cold and mineral, mixing with the pine and the faint smoke.",
"You press your fingertips to the glass. It is cool, and little drops chase one another down on the outside. You watch one drop gather others to it, grow heavy, and slide. Another follows, taking a different path, and it is a very gentle thing to watch.",
"On the shelf you find a kettle and a tin of tea. You fill the kettle from a jug of water by the door and set it on the stove. Before long it begins to murmur, and then to sing very softly. You take down a thick clay cup, rough on the outside and smooth within.",
"The tea is pale gold, and it smells of wild flowers and a little bit of smoke. You carry it to the armchair and sink down. The plaid cloth is soft from many washings. The cup warms your hands, and the steam curls up and vanishes in the light of the candle.",
"On the arm of the chair lies a book, left open and face down, as if somebody has just stepped out for a moment. Its spine is cracked and kind. You pick it up and turn it over. The pages are thin and the color of cream, and they smell of old paper and dust and a faint sweetness, like vanilla.",
"You do not need to know what the book is about. You read one gentle sentence about a path through tall grass in the evening, and then another about a lamp in a window. The words are slow and round. You read a little further and then let the book rest open on your knee.",
"The rain is steady now. It has found its rhythm, a deep, soft, even sound on the roof, like a long, warm breath. The trickle in the gutter goes on beneath it, a small bright thread of sound. Together they make a hush so wide and gentle that the whole mountain seems to be inside it.",
"A log shifts in the stove with a soft thump, and sparks float up and vanish. The firelight flickers through the glass and makes the ceiling beams glow, orange and brown. You watch the light move on the wood. It sways and slows, sways and slows.",
"You think of the long road that led you here, and it feels far away, like a place in a story you heard as a child. You think of the day behind you, and it grows soft at the edges. Everything that was loud has gone quiet. Only the rain remains, and the fire, and the warm chair.",
"Your body feels heavy in the best way. Your shoulders have dropped, and your arms rest on the chair. Your legs are long and loose. You can feel the heat of the stove on one side of your face and the cool of the window glass on the other, and both feel good.",
"After a while you set the cup down and stand slowly. You turn the book face down on the arm of the chair, just the way it was, so it can wait. You trim the candle, and its flame sinks to a small, steady glow. The room becomes a world of amber and shadow.",
"You climb into the bed, and the blankets settle over you, layer on layer. The weight of them is calm and complete, like being held by something very large and very kind. Your feet find a warm spot at the bottom and curl there. The pillow cradles your head.",
"From here you can see the stove glowing, a small orange eye. Above you the roof slopes close, and the rain falls on it, only an arm's length away. Each drop is a tiny soft knock. Together they sound like thousands of gentle fingers tapping a slow tune.",
"A breath of wind moves through the pines, and the rain leans with it, then straightens. The trees sigh. The sound rolls down the mountain like a long, low wave, and then it is gone. The rain goes on, patient as ever.",
"The smell of the cabin fills your breathing. There is pine and wet stone, warm wool, a trace of smoke, and the sweet old paper of the book. You breathe in slowly, and out. Each breath settles you deeper into the bed.",
"The fire in the stove has burned low. It makes a soft rustle now, a whisper of embers. The glass glows deep red. Heat rises from the iron and gathers under the roof, wrapping the whole room in a gentle warmth that will last through the night.",
"The rain is slowing, and each drop falls a little longer than the one before. The gaps between the sounds fill with more rain. The drops on the roof become one soft, continuous sound, like a hush. There is nothing in it to listen for.",
"Your eyelids are heavy. You let them close, and the room stays with you in the dark, warm and fragrant. The sound of the rain is everywhere, above and around, like a blanket of its own. You are held by the wool, and the wood, and the rain.",
"Your thoughts come slowly, one at a time, and each one is gentle. A cup. A candle. A path through tall grass. They drift past like leaves on a slow brook, and you do not follow any of them.",
"The rain falls on the roof. The rain falls on the pines. The rain falls on the stones, and the porch, and the path. It falls on the whole quiet mountain, softly, without end.",
"Your breath is slow now. In, and out. Each one is longer than the last. Your hands are warm, and your face is soft.",
"The embers tick once, and are still. The candle has burned down to a small gold seed. The cabin is dark and warm and safe.",
"The rain is slow. The rain is steady. The rain is kind.",
"You are warm in the wool. You are held by the night. You are far from everything, and nothing is needed.",
"Slowly, slowly, the rain falls. And you rest, and you drift, and you sleep.",
