  title: "The Night Train North",
summary: "A slow sleeper train rocks you north through rainy hills, with tea and quiet stations.",
  paragraphs: [
"Tonight you are going north on the slow night train. The platform is quiet and lit by a few round lamps, each one wearing a soft ring of light. You carry one small bag, and it feels lighter than it ever has. There is nowhere you need to be but here.",
"The train waits beside you, long and dark green, breathing out a little warm steam. A door stands open, and a gentle yellow glow spills down the steps. You step up, and the metal is smooth and cool under your hand. Inside, the air smells of polished wood and clean linen.",
"A narrow corridor runs along the side of the carriage, with a carpet the color of dark red wine. It is soft under your shoes and swallows the sound of your steps. Brass lamps glow between the doors, and each one hums very faintly. You walk slowly, trailing your fingers along the cool wooden rail.",
"Your cabin is behind the fourth door. It opens with a small, friendly click. Inside there is a narrow bed made up with white sheets and a heavy blue blanket, folded back at one corner as if someone has been expecting you. A little table folds down from the wall, and a lamp with a cream shade sits beside the pillow.",
"You set your bag on the shelf and sit on the edge of the bed. The mattress is firm and kind. Above you, a small rack holds an extra pillow and a second blanket, in case the night turns cooler. Everything here has been thought of, and none of it needs your attention.",
"Out on the platform, a long whistle sounds, soft and round like a note from a wooden flute. Somewhere a door closes, and then another, further away. The floor gives a gentle shrug, and the platform lamps begin to slide backward, one by one. The train is moving, so slowly that you feel it more than you see it.",
"You lean back and let your shoulders drop. The wheels begin their slow song beneath you, a soft double beat and then a pause, a soft double beat and then a pause. It is the oldest rhythm of the rails, and it is made for resting. You breathe out, and the sound takes the breath and carries it away.",
"The station slides behind you, and the town comes next. You see small windows glowing, each one a warm square in the dark. There is a kitchen with a green kettle, a room with a child's drawing taped to the wall, and a cat asleep on a sill. Each window is a small, private world that needs nothing from you, and soon the town thins into dark gardens and then into open fields.",
"A soft knock sounds at your door, and the conductor looks in with a kind face. She wears a dark coat with polished buttons and a cap set a little to one side. She asks, in a voice as low as a lamp, whether you would like a pot of tea. You say yes, and she nods and is gone, her steps going quietly down the corridor.",
"You fold down the little table and watch the dark fields go by. The moon is somewhere behind the clouds, making the sky a pale, silver gray. Far off, the shape of a hill rises and falls like a sleeping animal. The train carries you toward it without any effort at all.",
"Soon the soft knock comes again. The conductor sets down a small tray with a round brown teapot, a cup with a thin gold rim, and a plate with two plain biscuits. Steam curls up from the spout. She tells you the next station is a small one, and then she goes, and her steps fade, slow and even, down the length of the carriage.",
"You pour the tea, and the sound is warm and gentle. It is the color of dark honey. You hold the cup in both hands and feel the heat spread through your fingers and into your wrists. The steam brushes your face, and it smells of toasted leaves and a hint of orange peel.",
"You take a slow sip. The warmth moves down through your chest and settles low in your belly, like a small lamp being lit inside you. You nibble a biscuit, plain and buttery, and it crumbles softly on your tongue. Each breath you take is a little slower than the last.",
"Outside, the land begins to rise. The train leans gently into a long curve, and the tea in your cup stays perfectly level. Hills gather close on both sides, round and dark, their tops edged with silver. A scattering of sheep lie in a high field, pale shapes like stones that have decided to rest.",
"The first rain arrives so quietly that you almost miss it. A few fine drops touch the window and run sideways in thin, trembling lines. Then more come, and the glass is covered in tiny beads that catch the light of your lamp. Everything outside blurs into soft smudges of blue and black and gold.",
"You listen to the rain on the window. It makes a light patter, a whisper, a pause, and then a patter again. Under it, the wheels keep their slow double beat. The two sounds weave together like two threads in a blanket, and you let them wrap around you.",
"The train slows, and the brakes sigh long and soft. A small station slides into view, lit by one lamp hanging from an iron bracket. The platform is wet and shining, and a single bench waits beneath a little roof. A sign with white letters on a dark board sways very slightly in the wind.",
"A man in a heavy coat stands at the far end with a lantern, watching the train. He lifts one hand, slowly, in a greeting to no one in particular. Nobody gets on, and nobody gets off. After a moment the lantern goes up and down, once, and the train begins to move again.",
"The station falls away behind you, and its light shrinks to a single golden point. Then that point is gone too, and there is only the dark and the rain and the rocking. You find that your eyelids have grown a little heavy. You let them stay that way.",
"You pull the heavy blue blanket over your knees. The wool is thick and soft, with a faint smell of cedar and sun. You tuck your feet beneath it and feel the warmth gather around your ankles. The cabin is small, and that makes it feel safe, like the inside of a shell.",
"The train begins to cross a long stone bridge. The sound of the wheels changes, deeper and more hollow, like a slow drum. Far below, you can just hear a river moving over smooth rocks. It sounds like a thousand quiet voices all saying the same soft word. Then the bridge ends, and the earth takes the sound back again.",
"Now the train climbs through a forest. Tall dark pines press in close to the window, and their branches brush the glass with a faint scratch. Their sweet, resinous smell reaches you even through the shut window, or perhaps you only imagine it. Either way, it is lovely. The rain here falls from the branches in slow, heavy drops.",
"You switch off the lamp, and the cabin turns to deep blue. A thin line of light runs under the door from the corridor, faint and warm. The rain on the glass looks like silver thread now. You settle down into the white pillow and feel it hold the weight of your head.",
"You lie on your side and watch the dark window. Now and then a distant lamp passes, a farmhouse or a crossing gate, and it draws a soft stripe of gold across the ceiling. The stripe slides slowly along the wall and fades. Another comes after a while, even slower.",
"Somewhere along the carriage, you hear the conductor's quiet steps. They pass your door, unhurried and steady, one and then the next. There is the hush of a hand on a handle, and the faintest jingle of keys. She is making her slow rounds, and her steps sound like a soft promise that all is well.",
"Her steps move away, down toward the end of the train, and they become part of the rhythm. Step, and wheel, and rain, and breath. All of it keeps the same unhurried time. You notice that your breathing has begun to follow it too.",
"The train rocks gently from side to side, like a cradle on a long, slow swing. Left, and then right, and then a long pause in the middle. Your body sways with it, just a little, and you do not have to do a thing. The whole night is doing the work of carrying you.",
"The hills are higher now. The train goes through a short tunnel, and for a moment the whole world is warm dark and soft echo. The wheels sound closer, like someone humming in a small room. Then the tunnel opens, and the rain is there, quieter than before, as if it has been waiting politely.",
"You think of nothing in particular. A thought drifts in, about a cup or a door, and it drifts out again. There is nothing to hold on to and nothing to put down. The night is wide, and the train is slow, and you are exactly where you should be.",
"Another small station comes, and the train barely stops. A single yellow window glows in a little house beside the track. Inside you can almost see a table, a loaf of bread under a cloth, a clock on the wall. The light sits there a moment, and then it slides past, warm and silent, and is behind you.",
"The rain is easing now, falling lighter and lighter on the glass. The beads on the window gather and run down in single, unhurried lines. The wheels beneath you seem to slow with them, and their beat grows rounder and softer. It is more of a hush now than a beat.",
"Your arms feel heavy and warm. Your hands rest open on the blanket. Your legs sink into the mattress, and your feet grow soft and still. The tea is long finished, and the cup sits quietly on its saucer, giving off the last of its warmth.",
"The train slides on through a wide, sleeping valley. The window is dark now, and you see only the faint shape of your own lamp reflected, small and gold, floating out over the land. It seems the cabin itself is drifting through the night, a small lit boat on a dark and quiet sea.",
"You hear the wheels. The soft double beat, and the pause. The soft double beat, and the pause. Each pause seems a little longer than the last. You rest inside each one.",
"The blanket is warm. The pillow is cool and soft. The sheets smell clean, like air that has dried in the sun. You let your jaw loosen, and your tongue grow heavy, and your forehead smooth out.",
"Far ahead, the train sings one long, low note to the empty hills. It is a lovely sound, round and slow, and it fades into the dark. The night answers with silence. Then the wheels begin again, patient as ever.",
"You are very comfortable. The train is carrying you north, and it knows the way. There is a morning waiting at the end of the line, but it is far away, and it will come when it comes. For now there is only this, the swaying and the soft dark.",
"Your breath is slow. Your body is heavy. The rain is a whisper. The wheels are a lullaby.",
"The train goes on. The hills go by. The window is dark, and the night is kind.",
"You are warm. You are safe. You are carried.",
"The wheels go on, soft and slow. The pause is long now, and softer still.",
"And you rest, and you rest. The train goes on through the quiet north, and the night carries you gently away.",
