  title: "The Slow River Boat",
summary: "A small boat drifts past reeds, lanterns and stars on a wide, slow river.",
  paragraphs: [
"Make yourself comfortable, and let the bed hold you. Tonight you are going to drift down a slow river, and there is nowhere you need to be. Take one easy breath in, and let it out like a quiet wave on a shore. Now let the story carry you.",
"It is dusk, and you are sitting in a small wooden boat. The boat is painted a faded green, and the paint is worn soft in the places where many hands have held it. You sit on a wide bench in the middle, with a folded wool blanket beneath you and another across your knees. The wood holds a little of the warmth of the day.",
"The river is wide and slow. It moves so gently that you can barely tell it is moving at all, except that the bank slips by, a little at a time. The water is the color of pewter in the fading light, with a pale pink glow resting on its surface where the sky leans down to meet it. The boat is not rowed or pushed. It simply goes with the water, the way a leaf does.",
"A long oar lies along the side of the boat, dry and still. You will not need it tonight. The woman at the landing who pushed you off has waved once and gone home for her supper. She told you the river knows the way, and you believe her.",
"Listen to the water against the hull. It makes a small, patient sound. Lap, and a pause, and then lap again. Each little wave touches the wood and goes quietly away, like something that has all the time in the world.",
"Along the left bank, the reeds grow thick and tall. Their tips are pale gold, and they lean together as if they are sharing a secret. As the boat slides past, you hear them whisper, a long, dry, soft sound like a hand smoothing a sheet. A light breeze stirs them, and they bow, and then they stand again.",
"The air smells of cool water and damp earth and green things growing. There is a sweetness in it too, from some blossom you cannot see. You breathe it in slowly. Your chest rises, and falls, and the air feels clean and soft all the way down.",
"As you breathe, notice your shoulders. Let them sink down and away from your ears, as though they were resting on the water too. Notice your hands in your lap, loose and open on the blanket. The wool is a little rough and very warm, and it smells faintly of woodsmoke.",
"Ahead, near the reeds, a heron stands on a half sunk log. It is tall and gray, and it rests on one thin leg with its neck folded back. It has been standing there a long time, and it will stand there a long time more. As the boat drifts closer, it turns its head and looks at you with one round, calm eye.",
"You do not move, and neither does the heron. The two of you share a long, easy moment, the way strangers sometimes do when neither wants anything. Then the bird lifts a foot and sets it down in the shallows without a single ripple, and goes back to watching the water. The boat slides on, and the heron grows smaller behind you.",
"The river bends gently to the right, and now there are willows. Their branches hang over the water in long green curtains, and their tips trail in the current. The boat drifts toward them, and you lower your head a little as the soft branches brush past. They feel like cool silk across your hair and your shoulders.",
"For a moment, you are inside the willow, in a green and quiet room. The light is dim and dappled, and the sounds of the world grow softer. A drop of water falls from a leaf onto the back of your hand, cool for a moment, and then gone. Then the curtain parts, and you drift out into the open evening.",
"The sky has changed while you were beneath the leaves. The pink has deepened to rose, and above the rose it melts into violet. The first faint star, very small and low, sits just above the line of the far hills. You watch it for a while, and it seems to watch you back, kindly, from very far away.",
"Small birds swoop low over the water, catching the last insects of the day. They dip, and turn, and rise, and their wings make a quick, light flutter. Then, one by one, they leave, and settle into their nests in the bank. The air grows quieter without them.",
"Ahead, a low stone bridge crosses the river, its single arch dark and round. The boat drifts toward it, and the air grows cooler as you slide beneath. The stones are furred with green moss, and drops of water fall from them into the river, one at a time, each with a tiny silver sound. Your own breathing echoes softly under the arch, and then you are through, and the sky opens again.",
"The boat rocks very slightly from side to side. It is the tiny movement of a cradle. Let your body follow it. With each slow sway, your weight sinks a little deeper into the bench, and your arms and legs grow heavy and warm.",
"Around the next long bend, you see the first light. It is small and golden, and it comes from a window in a house set back among trees. Then you see another, and another. A village rests along the river here, low and quiet, its roofs dark against the sky and its windows glowing like embers.",
"The houses have thick walls of old stone and pale plaster, and their roofs are covered with moss as soft as velvet. Smoke rises from the chimneys in thin gray ribbons and wanders off into the dusk. You can smell it, sweet and warm, the smell of a fire fed with apple wood. Somewhere, someone is cooking something slow, with onions and bread.",
"A small wooden landing reaches out into the water, and at the end of it a lantern hangs from a hook. The flame inside is steady and small. Its light spills across the river in a long, trembling path of gold, and the boat drifts right through it. For a moment, your hands and the blanket and the wood all glow the same soft amber.",
"Further along, more lanterns hang from posts and low branches, each one a soft round glow. Their reflections stretch across the water and wobble gently with the lapping, so that every light has a twin beneath it. It is as if the river holds a second village, upside down, made only of light. Your eyes rest on the glimmering gold, and they begin to grow heavy.",
"From the open windows come the small sounds of an evening ending. A spoon taps against a bowl, and a door closes, softly. A dog gives one low, comfortable sigh, and somewhere far off a child laughs and is gently hushed. You cannot make out any words. It is like hearing a song from another room, with all of the soft parts and none of the sharp ones.",
"At one window, an old man sits with a warm cup, looking out at the water. He sees your boat and lifts the cup a little, in greeting. You nod to him, slow and easy, and he smiles and turns back to the river. No one in the village wonders where you are going. They know the river carries everyone gently on.",
"A warm smell drifts across the water now, of fresh bread and a little honey. Someone has been baking this evening, and the smell lingers in the air, thick and golden and kind. You breathe it in. It is the smell of a place where everyone is fed and safe, and it settles in your chest like a warm hand.",
"Slowly, the lights of the village slip behind you. They grow smaller and softer, until they are a string of tiny gold beads along the dark edge of the bank. The river widens again, and the banks draw back, and the sky opens up above you, enormous and deep. The air is cooler here, and you pull the blanket up to your chest.",
"The stars are coming out now, not all at once, but one after another, as if someone were lighting candles very patiently. A dozen, and then a hundred, and then so many that you stop counting. They are pale and silver against the deep blue. Each one is a tiny point of quiet, hanging above the slow dark water.",
"The river holds the stars as well. They float on its surface, trembling a little as the boat's slow wake spreads out, and gathering again whole behind you. It is hard to say where the sky ends and the water begins. You are drifting in the middle of a great, soft dark, scattered with light.",
"Low in the east, a pale moon begins to rise, round and calm. It lays a path of silver across the water, as wide as a road. The boat turns just slightly and drifts along it. Everything the light touches turns soft and silvery, the reeds, the water, your hands, the edge of the blanket.",
"Over the dark meadow on the right bank, tiny lights are blinking on and off. They are fireflies, drifting low above the grass, each one glowing a soft, pale green. They rise and fall like slow sparks that never quite burn out. The air is full of the faint, sweet smell of cut hay.",
"From the dark bank comes the low, round call of an owl, once, and then again, far away. It is a gentle sound, like a soft question that does not need an answer. A frog replies from somewhere in the reeds with a deep, slow hum. Then the night settles back around you, hushed and warm.",
"The current slows here. The river is broad and deep, and it seems to be taking a long breath of its own. The lapping against the hull grows quieter, and the gaps between each small sound grow longer. Lap, and a long quiet, and lap again.",
"Let your eyes grow heavy now. Your forehead is smooth, and your jaw is loose, and your tongue rests softly in your mouth. Your arms are heavy on the blanket. Your legs are heavy, and your feet are warm, and the whole of you is being rocked, very slowly, by the river.",
"You do not have to watch the shore. The river will carry you. It has carried so many boats before, and it has never once been in a hurry.",
"The stars turn overhead, so slowly that you cannot see them move. The boat rocks. The water speaks in its small, soft voice. Somewhere ahead, the river is carrying you toward a place where it grows even wider and even quieter.",
"Your breath is slow now. In, and out. In, and out. Each breath is a little longer than the last, and each one carries you a little further from the day.",
"The blanket is warm. The night is warm. The water is soft against the wood, and the wood is soft beneath you.",
"Nothing is left to do. The lanterns are all behind you, and the stars have all come out, and the river has all the time in the world.",
"You are floating, and the dark is kind. The lapping is very slow now. Lap, and quiet.",
"Let the boat carry you. Let the river hold you. Let the night be gentle, and the stars be near.",
"Rest now. The water is moving you softly on, and you are warm, and you are safe.",
"And the boat drifts. The river sighs, and you rest.",
