title: "Snowfall in the Valley",
summary: "A slow walk home through the first snow, past a warm bakery to a wood stove.",
paragraphs: [
"In a small valley between two long, round hills, there is a village where the first snow of the winter is about to fall. It is early evening, and the whole valley is quiet, as though it were listening. The air has turned very still, and very clear, and a little sweet. A woman named Elsie stands at her friend's gate, pulling on her gloves, ready to walk home.",
"She has spent the afternoon at her friend's kitchen table, sharing tea and a plate of ginger biscuits. Her stomach is full and warm, and her mind is quiet. Her friend waves from the doorway, and the door closes softly, and the yellow light from the window falls across the path. Elsie turns toward home with an easy heart.",
"The first flake lands on her glove. She stops and looks at it, a tiny, perfect star, white against the dark wool. It sits for a moment, and then it melts. Another lands on her cheek, light as a breath, and cool. She tips her face up, and the sky above the valley is full of them.",
"The snow comes down slowly, in big, soft flakes that seem to float rather than fall. They drift through the glow of the street lamps and turn silver as they pass through the light. The sky is the color of gray wool, low and close. Everything feels held, as if the valley were being tucked into bed.",
"Elsie begins to walk. Her boots press into the thin new layer of white, and the sound is soft, a quiet crunch that fades almost as soon as it begins. The snow swallows her footsteps. The farther she walks, the quieter the world becomes, until all she can hear is her own slow breathing.",
"The lane leads down toward the center of the village. On either side stand small stone houses with steep roofs, each one with a lit window or two. Smoke curls from the chimneys and drifts off into the falling snow. The air smells of woodsmoke and cold, clean stone, and it makes her chest feel bright and open.",
"She passes a garden gate, and a low wall, and a bare apple tree. Each branch of the tree wears a thin line of white along its top, like a drawing made in chalk. A small bird sits tucked among the twigs, round as a pebble, puffed against the cold. It tilts its head at her, and she smiles.",
"At the bottom of the lane, she comes to the square. A stone well stands in the middle with a little wooden roof, and a few lamps hang from iron brackets on the old buildings around it. Each lamp makes a soft yellow circle on the ground, and the snow falls through each circle like slow, gentle rain. The square is empty and perfectly peaceful.",
"On the far side of the square is the bakery. Its windows are fogged with warmth, and the glass glows a deep, buttery gold. The scent reaches Elsie before she reaches the door. It is the smell of bread just out of the oven, and cinnamon, and butter, and something sweet and dark, like caramel.",
"She stops at the window and wipes a small clear circle in the fog. Inside, the baker is kneading dough on a wide floured table, his sleeves pushed up to his elbows. Trays of golden loaves stand cooling on racks. A tall copper kettle steams on the stove at the back. Everything in there looks soft and floury and kind.",
"The door gives a little bell sound as she steps in, and the warmth wraps around her like a blanket. The baker looks up and nods, and goes on working, pressing and folding the dough with slow, easy hands. Elsie unbuttons her coat and breathes in the sweet, yeasty air. Her cold cheeks begin to tingle and glow.",
"The baker wraps a small round loaf in brown paper and tucks it into her hands. It is still warm, almost too warm, and she holds it against her chest. He tells her, with a smile, that it is for tomorrow's breakfast, or perhaps for tonight. She thanks him and wishes him a good night, and he does the same.",
"Back out in the square, the snow is falling thicker. The bell tinkles once more behind her, and then the door closes, and the world is muffled again. She tucks the loaf under her arm, inside her coat, where it warms her like a small sleeping animal. Her breath rises in a soft cloud, and the cloud drifts away.",
"She follows the road out of the square and over a small stone bridge. Below the bridge, a stream runs dark and quiet between its white banks. The water talks to itself, very softly, in a low trickle. The snow falls into it without a sound and disappears.",
"On the bridge, she pauses with her hands on the cold rail. Snow has gathered along the top of it, soft as flour. She runs a gloved finger along it, and it parts in a clean line. From here, she can look back at the village, a scatter of golden windows in the blue gray dusk.",
"The roofs are turning white, one by one. At first the snow only dusts them, and now it settles in thick, soft layers. Each roof wears a new cap of white, with a little curl at the edge where it rests over the eaves. The chimneys breathe out their smoke, and the smoke is gray against the white.",
"Past the bridge, the road opens out into the fields. They stretch away on both sides, wide and gentle, rising to the dark shapes of the hills. The snow is covering them in a smooth, unbroken sheet. There are no hedges now, no furrows, no lines at all. There is only a soft, blue, rolling white.",
"It is so quiet out here that she can almost hear the snow land. It makes a tiny whisper, a hush on top of a hush. She stands still for a while and listens. The field breathes out, and the flakes come down, and the world seems very large and very kind.",
"A lantern hangs on a post at a fence corner, left burning by a farmer who likes to see the way. The snow drifts through its light in slow spirals. Beneath it, a few sheep stand huddled in their shed, their wool thick and cream colored, their warm breath curling up. One of them lets out a long, low, sleepy sound, and then the others are silent.",
"Elsie walks on. Her boots keep their slow rhythm, press and lift, press and lift. The cold has stopped feeling cold. It feels fresh and simple, like a clean sheet. Her shoulders drop away from her ears, and her hands loosen in her gloves.",
"At last she sees her cottage, at the end of a short lane, with a gnarled pear tree beside the gate. Its roof is already white, and a small yellow light shines from the kitchen window. She left that lamp burning on purpose, and now it is a little gold welcome in the blue, snowy dark.",
"She opens the gate, and it swings with a gentle creak. The path to the door has vanished beneath a smooth sheet of white. She steps up to the door and stamps her boots on the mat, one and then the other, and the snow falls off in soft clumps. The key turns easily, and the door opens inward.",
"Inside, the warmth meets her at once. The cottage smells of wood and dried herbs and a little of last night's soup. She sets the loaf on the table, hangs her coat on its hook, and lines her boots up by the wall. The floorboards are cool and smooth under her stockinged feet.",
"In the corner stands the wood stove, squat and black, with a little glass window in its door. She kneels and opens it, and the red embers glow back at her. She lays two small logs on the coals, with a bit of kindling between them. For a moment nothing happens, and then a flame curls up, small and bright.",
"She closes the door, and the fire begins to talk to itself. It crackles, and pops softly, and settles into a low, steady murmur. The glass window fills with dancing orange light. Warmth spreads out from the stove, across the floor, along the walls, and up into the beams of the ceiling.",
"Elsie pulls her armchair close and sits for a little while with her hands held out to the heat. The warmth sinks into her palms and her wrists. She tears a piece from the warm loaf and eats it slowly. It is soft inside, with a crisp, golden crust, and it tastes of wheat and butter and quiet.",
"Beyond the window, the snow keeps falling. She can see it drifting past the glass, slow and steady, white against the dark. The garden is disappearing. The fence is disappearing. The whole valley is slowly becoming one long, soft, sleeping shape.",
"When the bread is finished, she feeds the stove one more log and lets it burn down low. She sets the kettle at the edge to keep warm, and she puts out the kitchen lamp. The room falls into the red gold dusk of the fire. The shadows move slowly on the walls like waves.",
"Up the narrow stairs she goes, one step at a time, each step creaking its own small note. The bedroom is under the slope of the roof, small and snug, with a round window set in the wall. A bed stands beneath it, piled with pillows, and a quilt lies across it, patched in many soft colors.",
"The quilt was made long ago, from scraps of old shirts and dresses and curtains, all stitched together by patient hands. Each square has its own texture. One is faded blue cotton, one is rough linen, and one is soft flannel with tiny flowers. Elsie runs her palm over them, and they feel like a quiet map of many good days.",
"She changes into her nightclothes, which are warm from hanging near the chimney. She pulls back the quilt and slides underneath it. The sheets are cool for a moment, and then they warm around her. The pillow cups her head, and she sinks into it with a long, slow sigh.",
"Through the round window, she can see the snow falling past. It is fat and slow, and it gathers on the outside sill in a small white ridge. Beyond it, the fields lie pale under the cloud, and the hills lie pale beyond them. Not one light moves in the whole valley.",
"Elsie lets her eyes follow a single flake. It drifts down past the glass, turning and turning, and she loses it in the dark. She finds another, and follows that one too. Her eyelids grow heavy, and her breathing grows long.",
"Under the quilt, her feet are warm. Her knees are warm. Her hands, folded on her chest, are warm. The weight of the quilt is soft and even, like a hand resting over her.",
"Downstairs, the stove ticks once as it cools. The wood settles in the walls of the house. The snow settles on the roof above her, flake upon flake, so softly that it makes no sound at all.",
"All across the valley, the snow is settling. It settles on the bakery roof and the old stone bridge. It settles on the fields, and the sheep shed, and the apple tree with its little bird. It settles on the hills, and the hills lie still beneath it.",
"Elsie breathes in, and out. The quilt rises, and falls. The house is warm and the night is long, and there is nothing at all that needs to be done.",
"Her eyes close. The last thing she sees is the soft white falling, and then even that grows quiet.",
"The snow keeps falling. The valley keeps sleeping. And Elsie sleeps, warm and deep, in the middle of it.",
